What equipment do you use? digital or film?

Once in a while I get asked what kind of equipment I use and if I shoot film or digital.  I love talking shop when it comes to photography gear, and if anyone knows me,  I love testing new equipment out and much to my wife’s dismay, I love buying it too…..pssssst, don’t tell her how much that new lens cost.  I want to live.  Please I beg of you……I want to live.  Awww shucks……..I’m just kidding, she’s as bad as me when it comes to new equipment….well, maybe not….close though.

Before I start getting into our equipment, I like to share with you my feelings of photography and equipment.  I don’t believe great equipment makes a photographer “great” and I don’t believe a great photographer has to have the best equipment to be great.  Hand over a $200 point and shoot camera to a talented photographer, and they’ll be able capture some beautiful images.  However, point and shoot cameras and consumer SLR’s are not fast enough or built to withstand the rigors of a professionals day of shooting. Great equipment does inspire and help the photographer capture the special moments of the day.

Film or Digital?  I’m 100 percent digital.  There are a few film shooters out there still, and I applaud them.  Film has a look and feel to it that is unduplicated.  Digital is getting close, not quite there yet, but close.  So why do I shoot digital?  First of all,  my workflow is fast and I can get creative with the images and develop what I see in my minds eye in post production.  A good film photographer has to rely on a lab for the post work and truthfully, I’m a bit of a control freak and love doing the work myself.  Secondly,  instant gratification and assurance that I captured the moment.  You don’t have that with film.  Nowadays you can check the back of the camera and see for yourself if the image was captured correctly.  That’s pretty awesome.  Thirdly, the amount we shoot could have never been done with film.  We shoot a lot of pictures and that allows for the beautiful album designs of today. Lastly,  we are able to offer so many more products with digital and with a quick turn-around.  We’ll be rolling those out throughout the year and if it wasn’t for digital, we wouldn’t be able to offer these great products. pssssst……wait till you see the awesome canvas prints we will offer  ; )

I shoot 100 percent digital and use Canon gear throughout.
